Alex Bregman Favored To Betray Astros, Land $100-Plus Million Deal With NL Club
The Alex Bregman sweepstakes is reportedly down to five teams: the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays. The race seems to be coming to a close rather quickly right now after it dragged out for weeks. At this point, Bregman could sign as early as this week.
FanSided’s Austin Owens cited a report from Michael Canter of Cubs Insider that revealed Bregman may have already made up his mind. Canter believed Bregman was going to sign with the Cubs as early as Wednesday. Owens also noted Canter’s report was “purely speculation,” so there’s a bit to unpack here.
“According to Michael Canter of Cubs Insider, Alex Bregman has already made the choice to join the Chicago Cubs,” Owens wrote. “Canter claims to have a relative that is close with the Bregman family and has been informed the Cubs are in agreement with the third baseman on a deal.
“This is currently purely speculation and obviously has not been confirmed by the Cubs organization. Canter states that Bregman’s potential contract is for four years and worth more than $100 million and describes the details of the contract as ‘unique’. With Bregman reportedly seeking a long-term deal or a short-term deal with a high AAV, this would be a happy median.”
Owens is accurate in his assessment. This seems like pure speculation, but the speculation makes a lot of sense. The Cubs have been trending up as the dark horse in the Bregman sweepstakes for weeks.
With Astros’ general manager Dana Brown seemingly admitting defeat in the Bregman sweepstakes, the Cubs could land the superstar infielder on this rumored $100 million deal.
Alex Bregman Lands With Historic Team in New Prediction After Cubs News
Two-time All-Star Alex Bregman appears to be headed towards divorce with his longtime team. Bregman has spent his entire career with the Houston Astros, but general manager Dana Brown appeared to indicate the team had “lost” Bregman in comments to reporters this week, according to insider Chandler Rome.
“During his address at the team’s annual media luncheon, Dana Brown twice spoke about Alex Bregman in the past tense, saying once that the team ‘lost Bregman,'” Rome reported. ” While Brown sounded pessimistic about a deal coming together another team was busy getting in on the action.
Late Tuesday afternoon the Chicago Cubs jumped into the mix with a strong offer for the Gold Glove winner. “Sources have confirmed that the Cubs have offered Alex Bregman a four-year contract, with opt-outs, worth north of $100 million,” Jacob Zanolla of RealCubsInsider reported.
On the heels of that report, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report predicted Bregman will land with the historic club. “The Cubs also have a star prospect to keep in mind, as signing Bregman would mean keeping Matt Shaw-MLB.com’s No. 19 prospect-on the back burner after a 2024 campaign in which he excelled at both Double-A and Triple-A,” Miller said in the prediction.
“They are all-in on winning right now, though, with their one year of Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, and they would be kicking themselves later if they don’t sign Bregman and Shaw’s foray into the majors goes as poorly at Brett Baty’s did. Purely a hunch, but Chicago having a little more desperation/need pushes them over the top.”
During the 2024 season, Bregman posted a .768 OPS in 145 games while batting .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs.
