Newcastle United confirm end-of-season departure - Eddie Howe says it's 'not ideal'

Things could look very different for Newcastle United in 7 days time – Here’s why

Not a great day for Newcastle United.

The match thrown away on Saturday in a 15 minute period at the Etihad.

Those three first half goals setting Manchester City on their way to an easy 4-0 victory.

Newcastle United just didn’t show up.

A very rare occurrence as proved by the fact that Eddie Howe’s side had won 12 of their previous 14 matches.

Whilst some are intent on playing the blame game.

For me, it is a case of leaving it to Eddie Howe and his staff to now go away and analyse what went wrong, how to quickly move on and refocus.

Which I think is what we as Newcastle United fans need to do.

Newcastle working on deal to sign £10m Premier League star who grew up on Tyneside

TBR Football understand Newcastle United are doing their homework on Bournemouth No.16 Marcus Tavernier.

Eddie Howe is keen to bolster the right side of his attack this summer, with Newcastle particularly lacking a threat on that flank to mirror what Anthony Gordon offers on the left.

TBR Football understand Newcastle are close to signing Antonio Cordero – a talent compared to Arsenal No.11 Gabriel Martinelli – although the Magpies are keen to make a more senior addition to the attacking department too.

Graeme Bailey – Chief Correspondent at TBR Football – has now been informed that Newcastle are doing groundwork on a potential deal for the Bournemouth No.16 this summer.

Tavernier – whose brother James played for Newcastle before joining Wigan in 2014 – has enjoyed a strong 2024/25 campaign for the Cherries so far, scoring two goals and providing five assists in 18 appearances to help Bournemouth sit fifth in the Premier League.

TBR Football understand Newcastle also have Brentford No.19 Bryan Mbeumo on their shortlist, along with Johan Bakayoko of PSV Eindhoven and West Ham’s Ghana international Mohammed Kudus.

The Magpies are also admirers of Tavernier’s Bournemouth teammate Antoine Semenyo.

Interestingly, Neil Warnock once compared Tavernier to Mason Mount – back when Leeds were linked.

What Marcus Tavernier has previously said about Newcastle

If a move for Tavernier – who Bournemouth paid £10m for in August 2022 – does materialise this summer, he would be returning to familiar surroundings.

The 25-year-old also spent time at St James’ Park alongside his brother, leaving the academy to join Middlesbrough in 2013, but has strong ties to the area.

Speaking to Bournemouth’s official website last season, Tavernier said: “Most of my friends are Newcastle fans. I grew up in Newcastle and I lived there while I was at Middlesbrough, and I know a lot about the city and the club and everything to do with it.”

Newcastle United have missed out on some fantastic signings over the years.

Indeed, Jarrod Bowen nearly signed for Newcastle before he joined West Ham, while Newcastle almost signed Marc Guehi in the summer.

Indeed, speaking on Ben Foster’s Podcast, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson has claimed that Steve Bruce called him about signing for Newcastle when he left Wigan Athletic.

Robinson had a £2m release clause when he was at Wigan, but now, the left-back is valued at £40m and Robinson can count Liverpool among his admirers.

Robinson spoke about his departure from Wigan and which teams he could’ve signed for.

Robinson says that Everton tried to buy him back and then re-sell him straight away, which wasn’t something he was keen on.
