Red Sox Predicted To Land Massive $154 Million 2-Player Haul In Shocking Trade
The Boston Red Sox have been closely linked to a blockbuster potential trade for San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease. But the Padres are reportedly asking for a huge return for their ace, and rightfully so. If any team in the league has the prospect capital to get a deal done, it’s the Red Sox. FanSided’s Cody Williams recently suggested the Red Sox and Padres may get a deal done for Cease, but Williams predicted it would be even bigger than initially thought. He projected a deal which would send Cease and Padres closer Robert Suarez to the Red Sox for a loaded package of players in return.
“More importantly, though, this trade would help the Padres continue AJ Preller’s mold of reshaping but still competing with Kutter Crawford and Wilyer Abreu,” Williams wrote. “Crawford isn’t Cease, obviously, but as a replacement with four years of cheap club control remaining but a solid baseline as a usable rotation option. Meanwhile, Abreu increases the outfield depth with Gold Glove defense in addition to a bat that’s proven against right-handed pitching and could have untapped upside overall at the dish.”
The Padres may be enticed by an offer so huge, but it would be quite a lot to give up by parting ways with Robert Suarez alongside their ace. The Red Sox would upgrade their starting rotation in a huge way while also adding one of the top relievers in the game. Suarez was incredible in 2024 and there’s no reason to believe he won’t be even better in 2025. Boston also has the money to re-sign Cease at the end of the season. Spotrac predicts the righty to land a deal worth $108 million which is well within Boston’s price range.
MLB Rumors: What ‘Worried’ Red Sox Most In Alex Bregman Sweepstakes
Alex Bregman lingered in MLB free agency for over three months, but that wasn’t due to a lack of interest in the star infielder.
The Red Sox were one of several teams interested in Bregman, one of the best position players available on the open market this offseason. In fact, one day before the two-time World Series champion reportedly agreed to join Boston, four other teams were rumored to be “still in” on Bregman.
The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey detailed the Red Sox’s competition in a column published Sunday, one day after Bregman finalized his contract in Boston. The report included a note on how the Red Sox viewed the landscape in the Bregman sweepstakes.
“While the Red Sox felt good about their approach, there was still significant uncertainty in the weeks and days leading up to Bregman’s signing,” McCaffery wrote. “The free agent weighed offers from the Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays and the Cubs. Internally, the Cubs’ aggressiveness worried the Red Sox the most. Meanwhile, sources told The Athletic’s Rosenthal the Tigers offered Bregman a six-year, $171.5 million contract, well above Boston’s offer.”
The Cubs reportedly offered Bregman one more year than the Red Sox but the same money, resulting in a significantly lower average annual value. And while Chicago previously made some nice offseason additions, Bregman clearly felt his best chance to win both now and in the future was in Boston.
