JT Toppin Scores 41 as No. 12 Red Raiders Down Arizona State 111-106 in 2 OTs

JT Toppin scored 41 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Texas Tech Red Raiders out-dueled the Arizona State Sun Devils 111-106 in double overtime on Wednesday night at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. Darrion Williams added 27, forced a turnover and made two free throws with just 1:49 left in the second overtime period to seal the game for Tech. In the win, the Red Raiders (19-5, 10-3 Big 12) posted the most points ever in a Big 12 game. Adam Miller led all Sun Devils (12-12, 3-10)with 22 points, and five players scored in double digits for Arizona State, which has now lost four in a row. BJ Freeman scored 21, Amier Ali added 18, Alston Mason chipped in 16, and Shawn Phillips finished with 15. Miller’s running floater with 10 seconds left in the second half put Arizona State up two at 90-88 after taking his own inbounds pass. The Red Raiders answered with a Chance McMillian tip-in with 0.8 seconds left to force overtime. McMillian ended with 14 points. Williams made a mid-range jumper with 25 ticks left in the first overtime to tie the game at 96-96 before Tech outscored Arizona State 15-10 in the second extra frame to hold on for the win.

The game was tied 14 times, and there were 18 lead changes in total, but just one before halftime of a competitive second half.

Texas Tech adds Stephen F. Austin to 2028 football schedule

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have added the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks to their 2028 football schedule, FBSchedules.com has learned.

Texas Tech will host Stephen F. Austin at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept. 2, 2028. The Red Raiders will pay the Lumberjacks a $500,000 guarantee for the contest, according to the copy of the contract obtained from Texas Tech University via a state public records request.

Texas Tech and Stephen F. Austin first met on the gridiron in 2001 and have played four contests total. The Red Raiders defeated the Lumberjacks in each of those contests, including a 28-22 victory in their most recent matchup in 2021.

Stephen F. Austin is a member of the Southland Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Lumberjacks finished the 2024 season 7-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

The Red Raiders were previously scheduled to host the Missouri State Bears to open the 2028 season, but that game was rescheduled for the 2029 season after Missouri State announced its move up from the FCS to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Conference USA.

Following the season-opener against Stephen F. Austin in 2028, Texas Tech is scheduled to visit the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sept. 9 and host the Wyoming Cowboys on Sept. 16.

Texas Tech is the first known non-conference opponent for Stephen F. Austin’s 2028 schedule.
