Kentucky basketball hits bump in the road at No. 4 Alabama | Lexington Herald Leader

This Kentucky basketball team is a ‘work in progress,’ but not all was lost at Alabama

Mark Pope was barely finished coaching Kentucky’s last game before his attention had turned to the next one. On Wednesday night — sitting in Rupp Arena, discussing a much-needed, emphatic victory over Vanderbilt — Pope looked ahead to the Wildcats’ matchup with Alabama.

“An epic challenge of all challenges,” he said to describe the upcoming road game against the No. 4 Crimson Tide, the clear preseason choice to win the SEC, a team that was No. 1 in some national rankings back in the fall and remains one of the national title favorites.

Kentucky Falls to Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 96-83

The Kentucky Wildcats fell to the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night by a score of 96-83. Despite a strong start, Kentucky was unable to sustain its momentum, allowing Alabama to take control in the latter stages of the game. The Wildcats now sit at 18-9 overall and 7-7 in SEC play.

A Fast Start Turns into a Halftime Deficit Kentucky came out firing, quickly building a 30-18 lead. However, Alabama responded with a dominant stretch, erasing the deficit and surging ahead by nine points before halftime. The Crimson Tide took a 47-40 advantage into the break, capitalizing on Kentucky’s defensive lapses and offensive struggles.

Second-Half Effort Falls Short After the break,

Kentucky attempted to mount a comeback, cutting Alabama’s lead to just three points at one stage. The Wildcats trailed only 70-66 with eight minutes remaining, but each time they seemed poised to regain control, Alabama answered with timely scoring runs. An 8-0 run by the Crimson Tide in less than 90 seconds pushed the lead back to double digits, and Kentucky was unable to recover in the closing minutes.

Key Performers and Missed Opportunities Koby Brea led Kentucky with 20 points, while Andrew Carr contributed 17. Amari Williams had a strong all-around performance with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.

Freshman Travis Perry added 12 points and four steals but struggled from beyond the arc, going just 1-for-7 on three-pointers. One of the biggest surprises was the lack of impact from Otega Oweh, who had scored in double figures in every game this season until Saturday. His streak of 26 consecutive games with 10 or more points ended as he managed just two points before fouling out with six minutes remaining.

On the Alabama side, Cliff Omoruyi dominated the glass, grabbing 15 of the Crimson Tide’s 39 rebounds. Alabama’s ability to convert turnovers into points and their rebounding advantage proved to be key factors in their victory.

Looking Ahead for Kentucky Kentucky was once again without key players Lamont Butler, Jaxson Robinson, and Kerr Kriisa, all of whom were ruled out with injuries. Despite the loss, the Wildcats have an opportunity to bounce back with important games ahead.
