MOTD analysis: Alan Shearer on 'mind-boggling' Everton penalty overturn against Manchester United

Alan Shearer shares the ‘mind-boggling’ part about the VAR decision in Everton vs Manchester United

Alan Shearer raged last night about the controversial decision to overturn a penalty award to Everton against Manchester United.

Everton continued their unbeaten run in the Premier League, drawing 2-2 with United at Goodison Park.

It was very much a game of two halves, with Everton taking full advantage of a terrible United performance in the first-half.

Goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure had Everton in a commanding position at half-time.

But United surprisingly mounted a comeback in the second-half, with Bruno Fernandes scoring from a free-kick and Manuel Ugarte then finishing from the edge of the box.

But most of the talk about the game has been about that VAR decision at the end, where Ashley Young went down under a challenge from Matthijs De Ligt and Harry Maguire.

For Alan Shearer, there was something genuinely ‘mind-boggling’ about the whole episode.

It is a decision that will be talked about for days.

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean agreed with the decision against Everton.

But Rio Ferdinand felt Everton were stung by VAR, admitting his surprise it wasn’t given.

Inevitably, the incident was analysed last night on Match of the Day – and Alan Shearer was stunned by one aspect of the situation. And that was that the VAR seemingly didn’t use the best angle to show referee Andy Madley.

Shearer fumed: “There’s two clear pulls on his shirt here from de Ligt. There really is. It’s clear to see it. The referee gives the penalty there, and now he’s sent over to the screen.

“But what is mind-boggling for me is they don’t show him the correct angles! They show him that angle there, that angle there, and straight away he’s off.

“That would be more confusing for me and I agree with David Moyes, it’s as if they’re trying to force the referee into a decision and for me, they get that wrong. It’s not a clear and obvious error.”

What David Moyes said about VAR decision in Everton vs Manchester United

There was real frustration for many about the penalty decision that was overturned – especially for those of an Everton persuasion.

Many agree with Shearer, believing that there were a couple of fouls on Young, who perhaps ultimately didn’t do himself any favours with how he went down.

David Moyes spoke about the incident after the game, and couldn’t really hide his disappointment, saying: “I don’t think the referee should have been called to VAR, I really don’t. Why would VAR intervene in that?

“I’ve got no idea. Unless they really thought it was bad, no, he definitely pulls the jersey and Ash goes down.  If it was the other way around, I wouldn’t have been surprised if it was given. So, then that’s me being pretty neutral in that decision. But we didn’t get it, and that was it.”

Thankfully, this decision is unlikely to have major ramifications for Everton, who are now 14 points clear of the relegation zone.

But certainly, it’s yet another case of VAR struggling to convince the masses that it is fit for purpose.
