Major Dylan Cease Trade Suitor Appears To Be Out of Sweepstakes for Padres' $14M Star

Mets, Braves Among 4 Rumored Suitors In $108 Million Dylan Cease Sweepstakes

The San Diego Padres have been rumored to be shopping their ace, Dylan Cease, this winter. Cease sits on an expiring deal and San Diego may not have the available funds to re-sign him at the end of the season. While the Padres are not forced to trade him away, it may make sense. But it’s going to take a huge prospect haul to pull him from their grasp. Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently listed the New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago Cubs as the most likely suitors for Cease. “Though he’s almost twice as expensive as King, Cease’s track record is just a wee bit more formidable,” Rymer wrote. “He boasts a 3.52 ERA over 716 innings dating back to 2021, with a league-high 891 strikeouts. It’s also possible that Cease hasn’t peaked yet. Last year saw him set a career-high for innings, and his stuff rated better than that of any National League hurler. As with King, the price to acquire Cease will likely consist of multiple controllable players if the Padres end up putting him out there.” These four teams all make sense for their own reasons. The Orioles are in a very similar position to the one they were in last offseason. Baltimore is loaded with offensive talent, but it needs an ace. Cease would fit with the team the same way Corbin Burnes did a year ago, but it may be tough to re-sign Cease, just like Burnes.

Twins would have one of baseball's most dominant rotations with Dylan Cease

The Cubs and Mets have both added a lot of talent this offseason. Neither team has a desperate need for pitching, but adding an ace like Cease wouldn’t hurt. They’re both big enough markets to afford to re-sign him in the future, too. The Braves need to add a pitcher to help replace the losses of Max Fried and Charlie Morton. Atlanta has a depth problem in the starting rotation and dealing away a few top prospects to bring in Cease could prove to be worth it in its pursuit of another World Series title.
