Will Howard, Kyle McCord and Quinn Ewers: an Ohio State quarterback NFL Draft conversation: Buckeye Talk podcast

INDIANAPOLIS — Day 4 of NFL Combine player interviews featured Ohio State skill players getting to talk while presenting an interesting discussion point.

Technically speaking, three OSU quarterbacks will be taken in this year’s NFL Draft, showing how different this era of the sport is. But is there an order the trio of Quinn Ewers, Will Howard and Kyle McCord should go in that can paint the concept of ‘Developed Here’ in the best light?

On this bonus episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Stefan Krajisnik and Andrew Gillis discuss the quarterbacks. Plus, a preview of the only two Ohio State players fully participating in the on-field portion of the NFL Combine.

Could a reunion with a former coach be Will Howard’s best fit? What the former Ohio State QB said at the NFL Combine

INDIANAPOLIS — When Ohio State quarterback Will Howard joined the program just over 12 months ago, the Buckeyes were in the process of making an offensive coordinator hire.

His first one never called a play, as Bill O’Brien left after just two weeks on the job to be head coach at Boston College. But that opened the door for a fit that worked for coach Ryan Day, and Howard.

Chip Kelly left UCLA and was hired as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator to take over play-calling from Day. And in just one season, he left his mark on the program.

Now, Kelly is the offensive coordinator for the Raiders, opening the door for a potential reunion at the NFL level between coordinator and quarterback.

“Man, I love Chip, and his offense, he’s an elite play-caller and he’s creative as hell,” Howard said during his media session at the NFL combine. “All the things that we were doing, he’s elite, man, and a great guy and I cherish our relationship, man, and I would love the opportunity to play for him again, but obviously things have to fall in place. We’ll see, obviously I would be happy to go anywhere, but if I got the chance to play for him, I would love it.”

Howard threw for 4,010 yards for the national champions and added 35 touchdowns to his mark as well. His 73.1 completion percentage was by far the best mark of his career.

“He’s one of the best coaches I’ve had, man, one of my favorite people I’ve been around and we’ve stayed in contact,” Howard said. “It’d be amazing to get the opportunity to play for him again — really anyone. I’d be happy to go anywhere, man, but he’s a great dude and I’m just so happy that he got the opportunity that he did and I think that’s a really good, really good place.”
