Taylor could be the starter in 2025.

The NY Jets are expected to scour the quarterback market this offseason in search of Aaron Rodgers’ replacement entering the 2025 season, but is it possible that said replacement might already be on the roster?

Veteran journeyman Tyrod Taylor is under contract next season and has plenty of fans in the Jets’ building. Most expect Taylor to at least be in the mix for the starting job next season, but one recent report suggests he’s already the team’s No. 1 option

Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reported on Saturday that the Jets are “ready to go into the season with Tyrod Taylor as [their] starting quarterback.” Pauline reports that the Jets’ plan seems to be to stick with Taylor and pair him with a Day 2 quarterback prospect.

Why the Jets Should Go With Tyrod Taylor as Their Starting Quarterback in 2025

The Jets have been connected to various soon-to-be free-agent quarterbacks, including Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and even Sam Darnold, but Pauline seems to be reporting that the team is unlikely to add any notable names in free agency.

Could Tyrod Taylor be the NY Jets’ starting quarterback in 2025?

Taylor is widely considered to be one of the better backup quarterbacks in the NFL, and he’s found success as a spot starter in the past. The 14-year veteran boasts a record of 28-28-1 as a starter and has thrown for 68 touchdowns and only 29 interceptions throughout his career.

Taylor most recently pinched in as a starter for the New York Giants in 2023, leading his team to a 2-3 record over five starts. In those five starts, Taylor completed 64 percent of his passes, throwing for 1,341 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

He’s had successful stints as a bridge starter with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans, and that’s obviously not accounting for his years as a full-time starter with the Buffalo Bills early in his career.

Taylor has proven that he’s a competent, borderline starting-caliber quarterback, even at his advanced age. The issue with him relates more to his long-term reliability.

The 35-year-old has battled injuries throughout his career and has often lost his job as a spot starter due to various ailments. A rib injury — suffered in a game against the Jets — forced him onto the injured reserve in 2023, prematurely ending his time as Giants starter.
