Joey Bosa was one of the best Ohio State football players in the 2010s era for the Buckeyes. He had plenty of big moments in big games, especially during Ohio State’s run to the national championship. His game-winning sack against Penn State and fumble recovery for a touchdown in the Big Ten Championship come to mind.

After a stellar career with the Buckeyes, Bosa was drafted third overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in the 2016 NFL Draft. He has played there ever since, not wanting to change teams. He has been a force of nature for them as well, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 and being named to five Pro Bowls, including last year.

Apparently, that’s not good enough for the Chargers under Jim Harbaugh. On Wednesday night, the Chargers made the decision to release Bosa. He will now become a free agent for the first time in his career. Bosa becomes a free agent right before the new league year starts.

While it’s a bit surprising they cut him after having a Pro Bowl season, this move isn’t totally shocking. Injuries have caught up with Bosa. He played just 14 games combined in 2022 and 2023. His stats have also gone down. He has only recorded 13.5 sacks in the last three years. Bosa had 10.5 sacks alone in 2021.

Bosa is hoping to turn his numbers around next season with a new team. He still can be a really good player when he is healthy. He just has to work on being able to stay on the field. Last year, he played 14 games, which still isn’t a full year. He hasn’t done that since 2021.

Bosa was always great with the Buckeyes. I think he can still play well in the NFL for another couple of years. If he finds the right situation, he can still be a game-wrecker. He showed that with a pretty solid season in 2024.
