Treysen Eaglestaff | UND Alumni Association & Foundation | University of North DakotaIntriguing player who torched Alabama basketball has entered the Transfer Portal

Nate Oats and Alabama basketball got an up close and personal look at North Dakota’s Treysen Eaglestaff earlier this year. Now, the guard has entered the Transfer Portal.

North Dakota guard Treysen Eaglestaff torched Alabama basketball in December for 40 points on 8-of-18 shooting from three point range as the Fighting Hawks made the Crimson Tide extremely uncomfortable in a 97-90 Alabama victory.

Now, Eaglestaff will enter the Transfer Portal. Might he be an option for the Crimson Tide?

It’s unknown at this point whether Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide would be interested in the star North Dakota guard, but one of college basketball’s social media insiders had an interesting tweet in the aftermath of the Alabama/North Dakota game:

“It’s handshake line scholarship szn.” – Trilly Donovan

Oats was extremely complimentary of Eaglestaff following the game:

“I don’t know if we ever found the matchup,” Oats said aboutEaglestaff. “That was the best individual performance anyone’s had on us all year.”

Alabama certainly didn’t play its best defensive game of the season against North Dakota, but Eaglestaff also hit a ton of difficult, contested shots.

Is Treysen Eaglestaff a fit for Alabama basketball?

Alabama struck gold with the North Dakota-to-Alabama pipeline with Grant Nelson, who has had two productive seasons for the Crimson Tide and was instrumental to the team’s Final Four run a season ago.

Oats might go back to the well again with the 6-foot-6 Eaglestaff.

In 33 games this year, Eaglestaff averaged 18.9 points per game on shooting splits of 41.6/35.9/79.4. His shooting splits likely would have been better had he played on a better team and wasn’t the focus of every scouting report. North Dakota finished the season just 12-21. In the quarterfinals of the Summit League Tournament, Eaglestaff dropped a career-high 51 points on South Dakota State.

Eaglestaff is an elite offensive player, but the concern will be whether he can play good enoguh defense to get major minutes in the SEC. He graded out poorly in that category this season, but the Fighting Hawks were one of the worst defensive teams in the country. They ranked 337 out of 364 teams in KenPom’s defensive efficiency metric.

Alabama will have a need on the wing with Chris Youngblood running out of eligibility. Barring transfers out, the Crimson Tide will have limited roster spots available for next season so Oats will have to weigh Eaglestaff vs. what could better options who enter the portal later on.
