Phil Parkinson can surprise us all at 2pm with shock start for ‘unlucky’ Wrexham ace vs Wycombe

Wrexham and Wycombe Wanderers are set to go head-to-head in a League One meeting on Saturday afternoon.

Wrexham travel away from the Racecourse Ground in a 3pm League One meeting on March 14th and will be in desperate need of a win.

After losing to Reading during the midweek action, the Welsh outfit failed to overtake their upcoming opponents in the league despite Wycombe Wanderers not being in action.

Wycombe game will not 'define' Wrexham's season - Parkinson - BBC Sport

In turn, when Wrexham face Wycombe later today, they will kick off already having played a game more this term and with a much worse goal difference.

Should they fail to beat the second-place side, it seems unlikely they will be joining Birmingham City as one of the two teams to go up automatically in 2024/25.

Ahead of the game, Wrexham have injury problems, which could see Phil Parkinson hand a very rare start to one player.

George Evans could start for Wrexham vs Wycombe Wanderers

With Andy Cannon out for the remaining league games and George Dobson picking up a knock recently, the Red Dragons have limited midfield options.

This saw James McClean handed an unorthodox role on the left of Parkinson’s midfield three versus Reading.

The Irishman wasn’t great in this role, however, and looked much better when he reverted into his natural left-wing-back spot ahead of Sebastian Revan, who wasn’t at his best and picked up a problem of his own on Tuesday.

So, now the McClean experiment didn’t work, it seems Parkinson will be left with little choice but to hand George Evans his first league start of the campaign.

What Phil Parkinson said about George Evans

Evans has only played 131 minutes of league football this term, being hampered by injury issues and previously heavy competition for places.

However, the 30-year-old did look sharp in recent EFL Trophy ties and earned praise from his manager recently.

Parkinson labelled Evans ‘unlucky’ ahead of the defeat to Reading, saying: “We’ve got George as well and you’ve got to give him credit because he’s been unlucky this season.

“He got back in the team and then got a bad injury against Stevenage. He’s worked hard and I was pleased to get George on the pitch.

Wrexham Council act to ‘address’ problem caused after Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover of Wrexham has been a tremendous success but one problem was caused as a result.

It has now been over four years since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney decided to purchase Wrexham from the Supporters Trust in February 2021.

At the time, the Welsh outfit were struggling in the National League, and it seemed unlikely they would secure promotion anytime soon.

Their first few months at the Racecourse Ground were not ideal, with the Red Dragons missing out on a place in the National League play-offs on the final day of 2020/21.

However, after play-off heart-break on 2021/22, Wrexham then ended their 15-year spell in the National League by securing 111 points to win the league title in 2023.
