Wrexham Council act to ‘address’ problem caused after Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover of Wrexham has been a tremendous success but one problem was caused as a result.
It has now been over four years since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney decided to purchase Wrexham from the Supporters Trust in February 2021.
At the time, the Welsh outfit were struggling in the National League, and it seemed unlikely they would secure promotion anytime soon.
Their first few months at the Racecourse Ground were not ideal, with the Red Dragons missing out on a place in the National League play-offs on the final day of 2020/21.
However, after play-off heart-break on 2021/22, Wrexham then ended their 15-year spell in the National League by securing 111 points to win the league title in 2023.
Two years later, Phil Parkinson’s men are competing at the very top of League One and may end this weekend second in the division.
Wrexham Council address problem in wake of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover
As well as improvements on the field, we have seen Wrexham grow exponentially off it.
To their credit, Rob and Ryan’s idea to produce the ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ documentary’ has been a tremendous success.
The Disney+ series has unlocked a worldwide audience for the small town in Wales, with fans travelling from all over the globe to visit the Racecourse.
However, this new influx of supporters has caused a lot of problems surrounding matchday traffic.
Now though, Wrexham Council have confirmed in a statement, as per Leader Live, that they are beginning a Park and Ride trial on matchdays to help address this issue.
The statement from Councillor David A Bithell read: “With the continued success of Wrexham AFC and an ever-increasing fan base wanting to attend home games, we have been working hard behind the scenes to address the issues associated with the demand for match day parking.
“I am pleased to announce that Wrexham Council has reached an agreement with Arriva North West & Wales to operate a dedicated shuttle bus service to complement the existing match-day parking facility that is available from our Ruthin Road site.
“Fans can benefit from free parking at the site, and will then be able to travel to and from the ground on a dedicated local bus service. Fares will be £2 for adults, £1.30 for children and young people, and concessionary passes will be accepted.
“This trial will commence with the next home game on Saturday, March 22 when Stockport County visit the STōK Cae Ras, and will run for the remainder of this season.”
Wrexham home fixtures 2024/25
Wrexham face Wycombe Wanders away from home in a League One meeting this Saturday.
They are then back at the Racecourse on Saturday, March 22nd, for a 3pm kick-off with Stockport County.
After Stockport, the Hollywood-owned club have three more home fixtures in the remainder of 2024/25.
They come against Burton on April 5, versus Bristol Rovers on April 18, before one final clash against Charlton Athletic on April 26.
