Five potential free agents Leicester City should consider signing this summer
Here are five players who are set to be free agents this summer and that it could be worth City taking a look at
If Leicester City fall into the Championship, they will need to cut costs.
In preparation for their revenue falling and for Profit and Sustainability Rules to bite, City may need to be prudent in their business. It would be helpful, then, if one or two of their new signings were free agents.
Most of the time, free agents are those players in their 30s, and examples coming up this summer include Michael Keane, Danny Ings and Callum Wilson.
Whether they would drop to the Championship is one matter, but they don’t feel right for a team looking to build for the future.
The stand-out 20-somethings set to leave their clubs for nothing this summer and that might not be unreasonable targets for a club like City are Kyle Walker-Peters and Tariq Lamptey, but both are right-backs and it’s not likely to be a position where the club need to strengthen.
So who could they target? Here are five players who are set to be free agents this summer and that it could be worth City taking a look at.
Kwame Poku
His manager Darren Ferguson thinks he’s the best player in League One and so a step up to the Championship feels inevitable this summer for Peterborough forward Kwame Poku.
The 23-year-old Ghana international, who usually plays on the right wing, has 10 goals and nine assists in 23 games across all competitions this season, Posh plummeting down the table during his three-month absence with a hamstring injury.
He’s looked a promising player for a while but has really taken his game to another level this term, and may be a good fit for City, especially if it allows Abdul Fatawu to be eased back in at the start of the season.
Harry Darling
Swansea centre-back Harry Darling looks an ideal fit for any Championship side wanting a modern-day defender. The 25-year-old has ranked very highly for progressive passes and ball carries during his time in Wales.
He looks great at attacking set-pieces and by all means seems a decent defender too. He was on the radar of promotion-chasing Sheffield United in January.
Tyrhys Dolan
A scorer when Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Blackburn played Brendan Rodgers’ City off the park in the FA Cup a couple of seasons ago, Tyrhys Dolan has been a consistently good performer for Rovers over the past few years.
Now 23 and heading towards the end of his contract at Ewood Park, the winger may fancy a change as he looks to take his game to the next level. He has four goals and five assists so far this season.
Gabriel Osho
French side Auxerre have an option to extend centre-back Gabriel Osho’s contract by a couple of years, but if they choose not to, the 26-year-old may be worth a look.
Osho was at the heart of the Luton defence that got promoted to the Premier League a couple of seasons ago, and he was a regular in the top flight too.
