Step aside Jamie Vardy, three other Premier League stars Wrexham can sign on a free transfer

Wrexham know that they are four wins away from a place in the Championship next season.

Phil Parkinson remains confident of promotion despite his team’s turgid display against Wigan Athletic that allowed Wycombe Wanderers to close the gap to a point in the race for second place in League One.

Wrexham’s recruitment team are already hard at work with their plans to bolster the squad should they gain promotion and transfer target Tom Lawrence is flattered by interest from the Red Dragons.

Lee Hendrie believes Wrexham should ‘chase’ Jamie Vardy with the striker’s contract running out at Leicester but there may be some better options out there for Parkinson to bring to the Racecourse Ground.

Three Premier League signings Wrexham should make on a free transfer

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have shown their ambitions for Wrexham and should the club make it three successive promotions, further quality will no doubt be added to the squad.

Wrexham could face trouble with wages in the step up in profile of acquisitions but having already been linked with the likes of Vardy and Lawrence, here are three Premier League players the club could sign on a free transfer.

Ben Davies

A Welsh international with great experience having been capped 93 times and played at the highest level in both the European Championships and the World Cup.

Looking past Davies ties with Swansea, the defender would be perfect for Parkinson’s system with is ability to play both at left wing back and the left side of a back three, he has done both for Tottenham Hostpur.

His contract expires in the summer and has found first team opportunities limited this season due to injuries and being down the pecking order but the 31-year-old has Championship experience.

Davies would provide great balance with his left foot along the back line and having been part of a Champions League final for Spurs, knows how to handle the pressure of big occasions.

At 29 years of age, Will Hughes still has a lot to give the game and has proven that by featuring 26 times in the Premier League with Crystal Palace this season.

His ability to play in tight space and receive the ball under pressure would make him an excellent option in midfield for Wrexham, who are crying out for more creativity from the centre of the park.

Hughes has excelled in the Championship before having scored 11 goals and produced 17 assists in his 195 matches in the division, featuring for the likes of Derby County and Watford.

A silky left foot but with the ability to use both feet equally as well, Hughes could be an astute addition should Palace choose not to renew his deal.

Josh Dasilva

Josh Dasilva’s fortune with injuries has been devastating to witness over the last few seasons as he is a player with exceptional talent when fit.

He is yet to feature for Brentford this season after having knee surgery in February 2024 and that makes him signing a new deal in West London looking ever more unlikely.

However, should he return to fitness in the summer, Wrexham should jump at the chance on gambling on someone who has already lit up the Championship during his time with the Bees.

Pace, power, technical ability, Dasilva has it all and his versatility could provide Parkinson with so many exciting ways to use him within the side, it is just a question of whether the 26-year-old can stay fit.
