Coventry City news from CoventryLive as former Sky Blues boss Steven Pressley has his say on Frank Lampard

Steven Pressley believes Frank Lampard would be a “good fit” for Coventry City as speculation intensifies around the appointment of Mark Robins’ successor.

The former Sky Blues boss was special guest on Sky Sports’ lunchtime coverage of Saturday’s match when City battled back twice to earn a 2-2 draw against joint Championship leaders Sheffield United.

Show host David Prutton asked: “Frank Lampard is the man being touted as the next Coventry City manager. We saw a taste of what he did in the Championship with Derby County. From a playing point of view there’s a huge stature with this particular man and an aura with him, but does he bring the requisite skill set to be a success at Coventry City?”

“I think so,” answered Pressley. “You know when you look at Frank there’s a little bit of an untrue narrative around his managerial career thus far. He did a very solid job at Derby, leading them to the play-offs, and then I think we shouldn’t underestimate how well he did in his first reign at Chelsea. You know, he had difficult circumstances, had to work with a lot of young players and I think he led them to fourth in the Premier League.

“The following season they started really well, it was a very positive period and then had a difficult time and lost his job. And the I think if you look at Everton, the amount of top managers who have struggled – you look at Silva and Ancelotti, top managers who struggled there – but I think the one job he probably regrets is returning to Chelsea.

“But I think he’s got a lot of skill set; he’s very good working with young players and has a track record of that, and I also think Coventry as a club will suit him. It’s a one city club, a big pressure surrounds that job. There’s a high expectation, there’s radio phone-ins, there’s the local newspaper, the daily paper that need to fill the space, three or four pages every day, and I think that’s the type of club that would very much suit Frank.

“He’s been a high profile player, a high profile manager and he’d feed off that intensity, so I think it’s a good fit for the club.”
