Vitalii Mykolenko slammed amid ‘just shocking’ Everton failure in defeat by Luton Town

Everton were “just shocking” in their defensive set up for Luton Town’s second goal, with Vitalii Mykolenko singled out, according to Rachel Brown-Finnis.

The BBC Sport pundit reacted on Final Score, as per the BBC Sport website’s live-blog on 30 September as Carlton Morris was left unmarked from a “simple run” to put the visitors two up at Goodison Park, as the Toffees full-back was trailing behind from a first-half free kick.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled a goal back but the promoted side recorded their first Premier League win of the season as Sean Dyche’s side lost at home again.

Brown-Finnis said (3.37pm): “It’s just shocking defending.

“It’s a simple run by Carlton Morris who’s a top goalscorer, number nine, who are you going to mark? It’s him. He peels off the back shoulder of Mykolenko, he’s free it’s a brilliant training ground free-kick.”

After two wins in a week against Brentford and Aston Villa there was suddenly some positivity around Everton despite the ongoing uncertainty off the pitch.

But it couldn’t last long as the team contrived to be beaten at home again, by a side without a victory in the league so far.

Perhaps it isn’t the end of the world since few would have expected Dyche to get a win at Brentford last weekend and they did, but it continues a worrying trend of failing to get results at home from winnable matches.

Over the past two years it has been the form at Goodison which kept the club in the Premier League, with the home fans making a huge difference, but suddenly the tables have turned and the players can’t seem to take any chances.

The Morris goal was asking for trouble, and while it is unclear if Mykolenko was individually responsible or not there was clearly an overload at the back post which the visitors punished with ease.

A couple of positive results was never immediately going to lead to an extensive unbeaten run so Dyche has to get his players to react to this latest set back positively.

But this is now the third home game already where the Toffees have actually done enough to win and then thrown the points away, so whether it is luck or concentration or tactics it needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

In other Everton news, crunch talks are set to be held between 777 Partners and MSP Sports Capital over a roadblock to the proposed takeover deal.
