Coventry City need to rip up their manager search and start all over again

Doug King’s search for a successor to Mark Robins is taking longer than expected – but there could still be a twist

Coventry City’s hunt for a new boss is now a couple of weeks old and there’s yet to be any white smoke seen rising from the CBS Arena chimney as Doug King and his board look to select a replacement for Mark Robins.

That may be a positive thing for all concerned. Not only does it show that King and Co are doing their due diligence in finding a replacement, it may also mean that they don’t miss out on the ideal man for the job.

Despite the lengthy process, there is now an argument for ripping up the process and starting again after the developments at the King Power Stadium.

Steve Cooper’s stock may have taken a bit of a dip after being sacked by the Foxes after just 12 Premier League games, but he is still a highly regarded coach and someone with a great CV and track record at this level.

Cooper departed Nottingham Forest having turned the Championship relegation candidates into a Premier League team, cementing himself firmly in the club’s rich history after ending their 23-year exile from the top flight.

He was appointed as head coach in September 2021, and led a dramatic rise rise up the Championship table, into the play-offs, and then a memorable victory over Huddersfield Town at Wembley Stadium in May 2022..

Cooper managed Forest through a turbulent period of rebuilding in the Premier League over 55 games, and some fans still feel his role was cut prematurely.

His previous work at Swansea and England should not go without due care and attention, Cooper is a savvy operator and a very intelligent coach.

In a world where Frank Lampard has been mentioned as a big favourite, Cooper is head and shoulders above that in terms of what the Sky Blues need.

With Cooper at the helm, the club would have an experienced, proven, ambitious Championship manager and a coach that the fans would warm to.

Doug King, don’t close that shortlist just yet, and keep that interview room open for a few more days – Cooper should be at the top of the Coventry list.
