Derby County told Exeter City decision was wrong as list of bad calls grows
Latest Derby County news from Derbyshire Live brings you what former Premier League referee Chris Foy has said about Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s goal that was ruled out on
Former Premier League referee Chris Foy says Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s disallowed goal against Exeter City should have been given.
The Derby County winger thought he had scored his second goal of the night during the second half of the 2-0 win when he headed in at the back post. But the referee’s assistant immediately raised his flag for offside despite him appearing to be clearly being played on.
Assistant head coach Richie Barker said after the game that the goal should have been given having seen a replay of the incident. And he has now been backed up by Foy in his latest edition of Behind the Whistle which looked at it in detail. He says Mendez-Laing was being played onside and the goal should have stood.

“We have the benefit of the angles from the tactical camera to judge this potential offside incident. The attacker who scores the goal appears to be in-line with the six-yard box,” he said. “When the ball is headed back across the goal, the moment the offside is judged, the second last defender is inside the six-yard box, therefore playing the Derby County attacker onside. This should have resulted in a goal being awarded.”
The list of wrong decisions that have gone against Derby this season continues to grow after Joe Wildsmith won an appeal to have his red card overturned at Bolton after he was adjudged to have handled outside the box. Korey Smith’s tackle in that game, which led to Bolton winning a penalty on the stroke of half-time, was also ruled to have taken place outside the box.
Last week a penalty was also awarded against Derby in the defeat to Shrewsbury, despite Max Mata appearing to fall over his own feet, but Tom Bayliss ended up missing the resulting spot-kick.
