Newcastle now ‘expected’ to agree loan signing in January

The Magpies appear likely to dip into the loan market to replace Sandro Tonali and bolster their squad this winter.

Tonali’s ban and a growing injury list has left Eddie Howe’s squad feeling stretched, with the Toon boss only calling on one substitute during yesterday’s battle with Wolves at Molineux.

According to Footy Insider, the club are interested in replacing their big-money signing but are unlikely to spend much money due to the restrictions of their old friend Financial Fair Play. That leaves Dan Ashworth and co scouting the loan market for a temporary move in January.

This is a name that doesn’t seem to be going away. One name thought to be high on the list of potential replacements is Al Hilal’s former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves

Neves set the Saudi Arabian club back around £47 million in the summer as wealthy clubs on the Arabian peninsular undertook an astonishing raid for some of football’s biggest names.

Al Hilal are owned by the country’s Public Investment Fund, which of course purchased a majority stake in Newcastle United in 2021. The links make sense, and according to Portuguese news site O Jogo, the midfielder could be open to a move.
