Coventry City news from CoventryLive as new head coach Frank Lampard discusses what he’s learned from doing his homework on the Sky Blues squad

Frank Lampard insists he has a good first impression of Coventry City’s squad but is keen to “find out” the reasons why the team are where they are in the division.

The Sky Blues have shown some really promising signs in the first few months of the season but inconsistency has seen the club languishing at the wrong end of the Championship table.

Lampard started his homework on the players and the team’s form a couple of weeks ago when he first applied for the position of head coach, taking a watching brief for the Sheffield United draw and Burnley defeat – both games having been televised on Sky Sports.

Asked what are his first impressions of the squad he’s inheriting, the 46-year-old told CoventryLive: “I think it’s a talented squad, the age profile is good in terms of that we hope there will be uplift with good work with individuals and the team collectively. I think the balance of the squad is good, looking positionally. It’s important to have a balanced squad. I have worked with balanced squads and less balanced squads and it makes a big difference, for everyone to be invested in what you are doing and pushing in the same direction.

“There’s a reason why we are where we are at this point, and those are reasons for me to go into and find out, and I will work away.”

He added: “Talking about those two performances, Sheffield United, I think we deserved to win that game regardless of circumstances. We started the game very well and from then on tried everything to win the game. And Burnley was a very tough match away from home where it can happen where you go away and lose, so there are things I can pick up from both of those games in their own way that can help me coming in and trying to hopefully affect it quickly.”
