Burnley and Coventry City are among the clubs keen on Philadelphia Union star Kai Wagner, according to reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Burnley and Coventry City both came into this season with ambitions of fighting for promotion, but at this moment in time, it’s only the Clarets who are in a good position near the summit of the Championship table.

Scott Parker’s side sit 2nd in the division while the Sky Blues, now under the new management of Frank Lampard, are down in 16th after an underwhelming start under the departed Mark Robins

Regardless of league positions, both sides will be out to strengthen in January. And, it seems they could be set to battle for one winter target.

Writing on X, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Burnley and Coventry City are among the admirers of Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner.

Italian sides Atalanta and Parma are also keen, while Wagner has admirers in Spain and Germany too. However, his release clause of €2m opens the door for his Championship suitors to strike a feasibl

Wagner, 27, has a goal and 12 assists to his name from left-back. It marks an impressive return in 45 games considering he has only played as a wing-back four times.

More on Wagner…

Wagner has been with Philadelphia Union since February 2019 and he’s been a big hit in the MLS, so it’s not a surprise to see he has interest on the continent alongside Burnley and Coventry City.

Though he can play as a wing-back, he is mainly used in a back four. He’s a dangerous creator from the left, registering a thoroughly impressive 44 assists in 215 games for the club alongside eight goals.

He spent time in his native Germany before heading to the States, enduring spells in the youth setups of FC Augsburg and Schalke 04 before catching the eye with Wurzburg Kickers and ultimately earning his move to the Union.

Left-back needed?

Heading into January, it’s not particularly surprising that both Burnley and Coventry City have a new left-back on their radar.

At Turf Moor, Lucas Pires is the only natural left-back, though the versatile Bashir Humphreys has also been deployed there.

The Sky Blues have Jake Bidwell and Jay Dasilva as options but there’s been reservations over both. As such, with a new boss in Lampard, it could be that there’s a bit of a shake up in January.

Time will tell just what comes of Wagner’s situation though with an affordable release clause and plenty of interest emerging.
