Doug King reveals timeline on plans for new sporting director role at Coventry City
Coventry City news from CoventryLive as Doug King discusses the change of structure at the football club and why he’s taking his time to appoint new role
Doug King says he is going to take his time to find the right person to become Coventry City’s new sporting director to support head coach Frank Lampard and his backroom staff.
The Sky Blues owner revealed at last month’s fans’ forum to explain the sacking of Mark Robins that he intended to change the management structure, starting by appointing a head coach rather than manager to oversee team affairs.
Speaking on November 11 about the change in direction, King said: “Look, when I came in here two years ago it was very different to where it is today. The interest in Coventry City is huge. The fanbase has moved hugely as well, we are getting 22,000 season ticket holders and we have been in an FA Cup semi-final, so yeah, the structure of the football club has to change now and the logical thing is to put in a sporting director.

“Now all these things cost money, high quality people cost money and we are still running a major loss making business so it’s a difficult conundrum but it’s the right thing to do, and we have just got to find a way of making it meet and not getting ourselves out of control.
“I think the biggest thing that would have got us out of control, and listen, it may still, we’ll see how it all turns out, was if we just continued as we were (without making the managerial change) and got to Christmas and got ourselves into a real pickle, out of control of the situation, no-one in to do anything in the window and same old situation with a bit of hope. And, honestly, I don’t want to be in that situation where control is taken away from the football club, and me and what we have invested in it. And it can happen really quickly.”
Asked by CoventryLive at Frank Lampard’s introductory press conference how far down the line the club are with their recruitment process for the new role of sporting director, King snapped: “I’ve just appointed a head coach! Umm, it’s been busy on that front for the last three weeks.
“Obviously we’ve been moving the structure of the football club a lot over the last two years from where it was, so the ultimate goal is to get that structure set up, but it’s not like it’s going to happen tomorrow.
“We’re just going to take our time, bed in the new coaching team who have just come in. We have seven or eight games before the end of the year and that’s our focus, just ease it in and try and get off to a good start with the new set-up.”
