Kirby Smart provides an injury update on QB Carson Beck
Georgia football may have come away with a massive win over Texas in overtime in the SEC Championship game, but it did come at the expense of an injury to starting quarterback Carson Beck.
Thankfully Gunner Stockton was able to step up in Beck’s place and help lead Georgia to victory in this game, but this team is at their best when Beck is in the game, so his status over the next few weeks while we wait for Georgia’s first College Football Playoff game is going to be discussed a lot.
And that discussion began Saturday night after Georgia’s win over Texas as Kirby Smart provided an initial update on how Beck is doing.
“Yeah, he’s got an upper extremity injury,” Smart said via dawgnation.com. “We don’t know to what extent. Basically, we looked at it in there, and it looked okay. But he couldn’t have grip strength and throw the ball in the locker room. So it was a little bit painful for that. So we need to find out exactly what’s going on and have to MRI and look into it.”
Not much is known about Beck’s health at this time
According to Smart, Beck was unable to grip or throw the ball in the locker room during halftime, so that made his choice to roll with Stockton under center that much easier. But as mentioned, Georgia needs Beck back if they want to have the best chance possible to win a National Championship, so his health is extremely important.
Smart also mentioned that Beck will be getting an MRI done in the coming days so they can learn the severity of his injury.
One positive takeaway however is that Beck did come in and replace Stockton on the final play of the game because he had to sit for one play after his helmet came off. So even though Beck was having issues gripping the ball during halftime, he was clearly able to grip the ball just fine on that final play.
Smart will certainly give an update as soon as Beck has his MRI done, but hopefully Georgia’s time off until New Year’s Day will be enough time for Beck to get healthy and get back on the field, because he gives UGA their best chance at winning a National Championship this season.
