Sunderland just missed the perfect opportunity to add Black Cats legend to Regis Le Bris’ coaching team
Regis Le Bris is keen to expand his coaching staff at Sunderland, but if the club had acted sooner, they’d have been able to add a modern legend to the team.
Sunderland have excelled under the leadership of Regis Le Bris so far, and the Frenchman has made a hugely positive impact on the pitch in his first six months on Wearside.
The Black Cats are keeping pace with the top teams in the Championship as we approach the halfway stage of the campaign.
But, Le Bris is thought to want a new coach to come in and help him take the club even further, and we know who Sunderland should have hired.

Sunderland should have hired Lee Cattermole before Bristol Rovers move
Just last week it was announced that Lee Cattermole had taken on a coaching role at Bristol Rovers.
It’s a big step for the former Sunderland man, and Cattermole’s appointment could bring benefits for the Black Cats, too, if they are looking for a place to send loanees in the New Year.
But, aside from the obvious advantage of providing a home for Sunderland’s loan players, there is also one major downside to Cattermole taking on the job at Bristol Rovers.
Sadly, at least for now, it means the Mackems legend won’t be joining the Sunderland coaching staff. That’s a real shame, as Cattermole could have brought all the intensity and passion the club needs.

A former Sunderland player could be ideal coaching addition for Regis Le Bris
Le Bris has already endeared himself really well to the Sunderland faithful, and he clearly has a good grasp of what it means to be the Sunderland manager.
But, a club of that stature and with such a strong cultural identity would always benefit from having someone in the backroom team who truly understands the city, the people, and the football club inside out.
While there would be huge benefits in Le Bris appointing a coach whom he has worked with before, surely the blending of his own ideologies with a former Sunderland player — someone who gets it — would be the perfect move.
One man who stands out as a potentially good fit is George McCartney. The Northern Irishman made almost 200 appearances for Sunderland in his playing days and is now assistant manager at Linfield in his homeland. Sign him, up, Regis!
