Dodgers Want to Extend Dave Roberts This Offseason, Says GM

Dodgers Have Not Had Extension Talks With Dave Roberts

Dave Roberts’ contract will expire at the end of the 2025 season. Initially, the Dodgers said they would discuss another contract extension for Roberts after the World Series. However, the Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes told reporters that the conversation has not happened yet.

Instead, the franchise is focused on navigating the free agent market and trading pool for new players.

“We’ve talked to him like, ‘Hey, let’s get our team in a good place and then we’re going to sit down and talk,’” Gomes said. “So the expectation is, let’s get through all of this player stuff and then we can have conversations.”

So far, the Dodgers have signed four free agents in outfielder Michael Conforto and pitchers Blake Snell, Blake Treinen, and Sam Carlson. Los Angeles has yet to make any trades this offseason.

Roberts took over as the Dodgers’ 32nd manager in 2016. He signed a three-year contract extension in March 2022, which will last through next season. Since taking the reins of the Dodgers coaching staff, Roberts has established himself as one of the best managers in MLB history.

After winning the eighth World Series title in franchise history, Baseball America named Roberts the 2024 Major League Baseball Manager of the Year. Now, Roberts has won two World Series titles and four National League pennants as the Dodgers’ manager. He also holds the highest career-winning percentage (.627) among all active MLB managers.

Although the Dodgers have not offered Roberts a contract extension yet, it is undoubtedly looming in the future. For now, Los Angeles is determined to build a dynasty.

Dodgers are Searching for Their Rotation’s Sixth Man

The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced that they plan to have a six-man rotation for the 2025 season. Los Angeles managed to win the World Series despite having only three dependable starters at the time. However, the length of their injured list last season was proof that a team can never have enough pitching. With both these things in mind, they have already signed two-time Cy-Young Award winner Blake Snell and are one of the favorites to sign Roki Sasaki. But they are likely searching for more depth.

Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki are all accustomed to five days of rest between starts as that is the way Japanese baseball operates. In addition, Ohtani is recovering from shoulder surgery after injuring his shoulder in the World Series. As a consequence, he will not be ready to pitch in the starting rotation by Opening Day. Dodgers management also suggested that when the reigning National League Most Valuable Player does return to the mound, it will be under an innings limit.

Additional Reinforcements

Furthermore, starters Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, and Dustin May are all coming off the IL next year. Everyone with the exception of Glasnow will be coming off of surgery of some sort. It is unclear how much time, if any, it will take these pitchers to adjust to the rigors of the regular season.
