Is Los Angeles close to re-signing Teoscar Hernández

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly been interested in power-hitting Teoscar Hernández since missing out on Juan Soto.

After the Dodgers signed outfielder Michael Conforto, reports circulated that Los Angeles was “no longer inevitable” to re-sign Hernández. According to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, that may no longer be the case.

“I think we’re close,” Roberts said on the “The Dodgers Bleed Los Podcast” this weekend. “I pray, everyone say your prayers that we get Teo done so he can come back in Dodger blue as well.”

New reports surfaced Monday on what the 2024 World Series champion seeks in a new deal. Hernández is supposedly seeking a three-year deal in the $22-24 million a year range, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez reported last week that the Dodgers have been in conversations with Hernández’s reps but have been unable to bridge the gap on a new deal.

If the Dodgers can’t reach a deal with the slugger, Hernández has long been viewed as a perfect fit for the Red Sox. At Fenway Park, he has a career slash line of .282/.344/.606 and 14 home runs across 45 games played.

The Red Sox and Dodgers are among six teams in the mix for Hernández, along with the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies and Kansas City Royals. Hernández was a standout player in Toronto from 2017 to 2022. He slashed .263/.320/.503 with 129 home runs across 609 games for the Blue Jays.

There was a belief around the league that once superstar outfielder Juan Soto decided his future, the teams that lost in his bidding war would turn their focus to Hernandez. And that is exactly what has happened. Wealthy clubs like the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly jumped into the chase for the 32-year-old.

It has made things far more difficult for the Dodgers. That is why on Tuesday, MLB.com league insider Mark Feinsand suggested LA could also pivot and target a big-time slugger to replace Teoscar Hernandez in the outfield.
