‘Makes sense’ – Bryan Mbeumo asked if he is signing for Newcastle United next season
Newcastle supporters were surprised to see Mbeumo named on Brentford’s bench last night for the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie. The forward had to wait until the hour-mark before being introduced and marked his cameo with a late assist for Yoane Wissa’s consolation goal.
After the game, Bees manager Thomas Frank was asked why he didn’t start the Cameroonian.
“He was the one that I was thinking ‘do I start him or not start him’,” Frank explained. “As I said before, we’ve had the least optimal schedule of all the eight teams in this competition so I had to make some compromises because we have a very short turnaround.
“Full confidence to us to do what we do. He actually came on and created the goal so if we just did our defensive work, the game plan would have probably still worked but unfortunately, we didn’t defend well enough.”
The Magpies were likely relieved to see the 25-year-old left out of the starting XI. Indeed, it was only a couple of weeks ago the Bees’ top goalscorer tormented Eddie Howe’s men during their 4-2 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium.
It is no wonder other clubs are showing interest in Mbeumo. Newcastle are one of those.
So, Matty Renton of the Magpie Channel took the opportunity to speak to Mbeumo when he was signing autographs and posing for photos after the game. In the clip doing the rounds on social, the winger is asked: “Are you signing for Newcastle next season, Bryan? Come to the Toon, lad. You know it makes sense.”
The question did seem to bring out a smirk on Mbeumo’s face but not a word came out of his mouth. I wonder if he knows about PSR…
