Wolves look set to win the race for Southampton striker Che Adams ahead of Everton and Leeds United, according to TEAMtalk.

The report on 17 May reveals that the 27-year-old – who will be a free agent upon the expiry of his contract this summer – has verbally agreed to join Wolves when his current deal ends.

The combination of guaranteed Premier League football and a move back to the Midlands – close to his friends and family – are thought to appeal to the centre-forward.

Everton look set to miss out on Che Adams

Adams would have represented a shrewd transfer for Everton, who desperately require reinforcements up front but have their hands tied financially following a season in which they were docked an eventual total of eight points for two separate breaches of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The capture of a striker in his prime years, with Premier League experience, on a free transfer would have been astute indeed from a financial perspective – provided the Scotsman’s wage demands were not excessive.

However, there is also an argument to suggest that Adams is not what Everton need.

Adams’ Premier League record fails to inspire much excitement, with just 25 strikes in 124 appearances in the competition – or just under a goal every five appearances. Furthermore, the burly centre-forward has never reached double figures in a single English top-flight season, with a career-best of nine in the 2020/21 campaign.

He has enjoyed a strong 2023/24 season in the Championship, though, scoring 16 times in 40 outings in the second tier to sit joint-sixth in the top scorers charts.

For Everton to get back to where they wish to be, however, they may require a superior calibre of centre-forward.
