Sunderland, Watford and Hull City battling MLS clubs for relegated midfielder
Sunderland, Watford and Hull City are among those to register interest in Sheffield United’s departing midfielder Oli Norwood, as per Football Insider.
Sunderland, Watford and Hull City will all be playing Championship football again next season, as will Sheffield United following their relegation from the Premier League.
The Blades have endured a dismal season and are now facing a summer makeover of the playing squad with Chris Wilder at the helm.
A number of exits have already been confirmed by the Bramall Lane outfit. Among those moving on is midfielder Oli Norwood, and it seems he’s drawing some early interest from elsewhere.
As per a report from Football Insider, Championship trio Sunderland, Watford and Hull City have all registered an interest in the 33-year-old Northern Irishman as he prepares to become a free agent.
A number of MLS clubs are also keen on Norwood, who will be free to move on for nothing.
He has spent his entire career in England, so an opportunity in the United States could prove tempting. However, if he wants to add a fifth EFL promotion to his CV, a Championship move may appeal to Norwood.
Back to the Championship?
While Norwood will be moving on from Sheffield United, interest from Sunderland, Watford and Hull City means he may yet line up in the Championship next season.
If he does that, there will be few players in the division who can match his second-tier experience. Norwood has played a massive 381 Championship games over his entire career, with almost 100 Premier League appearances also to his name.
With such pedigree to his name, it’s no wonder Sunderland, Watford and Hull City are keen.
MLS clubs could prove tempting for Norwood though. We’ve seen plenty of players in the later years of their career move over to the States in recent years so it will be intriguing to see if interest in him from over the Atlantic firms up this summer.
