Chelsea flop Ross Barkley makes surprise Premier League return with Luton Town

Ross Barkley says he is thrilled to be back in the Premier League after unexpectedly signing for Luton Town.

The former Everton and Chelsea star has joined the newly promoted side on a free after leaving Nice earlier this summer.

Once hailed as one of England’s best young talents, the midfielder has endured a disappointing decline since leaving Goodison Park for Stamford Bridge in January.

Though he initially impressed under Maurizio Sarri, he failed to establish himself as a regular in Chelsea’s starting XI, even spending a season on loan at Aston Villa, though he did win the FA Cup, Europa League and Club World Cup during his time in west London.

He agreed to terminate his contract with the Blues early last summer, ending his spell with 12 goals and 11 assists in 100 appearances.

He initially sought to rebuild his career in France, but would make just nine Ligue 1 starts for Nice and he’s no hoping for much better things at Kenilworth Road.

‘Why Luton? Going from the Conference to the Premier League is a great story and for me personally to be back in the Premier League, it’s great motivation,’ the 29-year-old said upon the confirmation of his signing on Wednesday.

‘I’m still relatively young and over the last couple of years I’ve not played as much as I’d have liked.

‘But I’ve reserved a lot of energy and looked after myself, so it’s great to be here now as I’ve got a lot to show but I’m ready and feeling motivated.’

Barkley has become Luton’s eighth signing of the summer as they look to defy the odds and survive their maiden season in the Premier League, with their opening game to take place on Saturday at Brighton.

‘Ross brings loads of experience at the top level, has international experience and brings an x-factor,’ Hatters manager Rob Edwards said.

‘He gives us something different, he has that ability to make something out of nothing and we need that in the Premier League. He’s got all the tools required to make a difference for us.

‘It’s really exciting for the football club. We want the fans to be excited and they should be about Ross’ arrival.’
