Sunderland have been mentioned alongside a prolific attacker in the English Football League.

The summer transfer window is now officially open. But for Sunderland, the ongoing search for a new manager will surely impact upon the club’s summer transfer business.

Sunderland are nearly four months without a manager and continue to see linked names fall out of contention.

Liam Rosenior is the latest, joining Will Still and others in pursuing other opportunities, if not landing an entirely new job in itself.

Sunderland fans are venting their frustration at Kristjaan Speakman amid the ongoing managerial fiasco; the club’s sporting director has been in place for three-and-a-half years and has earned praise in the past.

But the managerial saga and the last few transfer windows, in which the club has failed to sign a much-needed striker, has brought Speakman under the spotlight.

Despite not having a manager in place, though, it looks like Speakman has now added a potential striker signing to his wishlist.

Sunderland linked with Macaulay Langstaff at Notts County

Journalist Darren Witcoop says that Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff, who scored 29 goals in all competitions for Notts County last season, has ‘admirers’ in the Championship.

Witcoop links Sunderland in the post, naming Swansea City as one of the teams ‘watching developments’ this summer.

Langstaff, 27, has been linked with Sunderland in the past. He was heavily linked with a move away from Notts County in January but Witcoop said that Championship clubs were unsure if he could make the step up from League Two.Notts County finished in 14th place of the League Two table last season, but Langstaff claimed the Golden Boot award with 28 league goals and five assists.

How Kristjaan Speakman can redeem himself at Sunderland

Speakman is certainly a man under fire at Sunderland right now, and if this next managerial appointment doesn’t work out, his position will surely come under severe threat.

Perhaps the only way that Speakman can save his reputation among Sunderland fans now is by making good signings in the summer transfer window.

Once again, Sunderland are in desperate need of strikers. But once again, Speakman may sign players without Championship experience, which is something the first-team desperately lacks.

Langstaff’s goal record is impressive. But he’s never played in the Championship, so there’ll be definite question marks over whether or not he could make the step up this season.

With other clubs in the race as well, it could be an expensive risk for Sunderland, and on a player who’s well out of the age range of players they normally sign.

But it seems like Sunderland are still keeping an eye on transfers despite not having a manager in place, which may give fans some glimmer of hope for the months ahead.
