Why Sunderland owners must absolutely reject possible £40m transfer coup in January

Sunderland could be in store for a very busy January transfer window, with the rumour mill already turning.

Deadline day was just a month ago. And for Sunderland, it was a hectic deadline day with four new players arriving at the Stadium of Light

Already, we’re seeing several Sunderland transfer rumours emerging ahead of the January transfer window.

It comes after a solid start to the new season for the Black Cats under Regis Le Bris who has his side sitting in 3rd place of the Championship table after the opening seven games.

Last time out, Sunderland lost 2-1 at Watford, but will look to make amends when they host Derby County on Tuesday night.

Whilst focus among the Sunderland hierarchy will be on Le Bris and how he fares in the Championship over the coming weeks and months, there’ll no doubt be a thought on January, and even the next summer transfer window.

Sunderland entertaining possible £40million transfer coup in January

One name in transfer headlines right now is Chris Rigg. Real Madrid have been linked with Rigg following his impressive start to the season, with a handful of Premier League teams also linked.

Birmingham City are also plotting a surprise move for Rigg but that potential move looks extremely unlikely as things stand.

More recently, there’s been further reports of interest in Anthony Patterson. The Sunderland academy man has had links in the past but now Manchester United are keen on Patterson ahead of the January transfer window.

It’s said that Patterson would cost United £20million. There’s also a £20million price tag or so being speculated for Rigg, meaning that Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus could be in store for a £40million haul in January.

Sunderland owners must knock back Manchester United in January

Whilst £40million for two academy players would be enticing, marking a complete and huge profit on two very impressive players, Louis-Dreyfus must do all he can to avoid this temptation.

Under Le Bris, Sunderland have somewhat unexpectedly emerged as early promotion contenders in the Championship, and reaching the Premier League is of course the ultimate goal for Sunderland and Louis-Dreyfus.
