Tavien St. Clair, Bellefontaine, QuarterbackOhio State Takes Major Step in Chances to Land Award-Winning Star Quarterback

The Ohio State Buckeyes are looking for the program’s quarterback of the future. Head coach Ryan Day’s coaching staff just made a big-time offer to one of the top five-star quarterbacks in the 2026 college football recruiting class. With Will Howard heading to the NFL draft, the Buckeyes are likely headed to a quarterback competition for 2025. Former Alabama Crimson Tide signal-caller Julian Sayin is the early favorite to be Ohio State’s QB1, but there will be competition. The Buckeyes also added five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair who could compete with Sayin to replace Howard. Day already has his eye on the future as Ohio State just offered five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons from the 2026 class.

The standout signal-caller won the Gatorade California Football Player of the Year this past high school season. Lyons is a Folsom, Calif. product and revealed the Buckeyes offer in a Friday message on X.

On3.com has USC as the favorite to land Lyons as the Buckeyes look to gain ground on Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley. “The Buckeyes are one of six finalists in the recruitment of Nashville Christian five-star Jared Curtis, the No. 1 QB in the 2026 cycle, per the On3 Industry Ranking,” On3.com’s Hunter Shelton wrote on Friday. “Lyons, while still trending to in-state USC in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, is giving other schools a look, too. Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore and Oregon head coach Dan Lanning have all been by to visit Lyons this month. The likes of Arizona and North Carolina have also offered in 2025 so far.”
