Everton could still sign 89-goal free agent striker who Carlo Ancelotti wanted in 2020

Everton could still sign 89-goal free agent striker who Carlo Ancelotti wanted in 2020

Everton made just one addition in the winter transfer window.

Carlos Alcaraz was the Toffees’ solitary signing after he completed a loan move from Brazilian outfit Flamengo – which will become permanent if certain clauses are met.

Everton explored a number of deals on deadline day but despite a late £10m bid for Tom Fellows, they failed to strike a deal.

A striker was on David Moyes’ wishlist and Everton had looked Rangers’ Hamza Igamane, but his £25m price tag proved too costly.

With the injuries to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja, Moyes’ side are certainly short up front, so they could yet sign a free-agent striker.

Free agents can still be signed even after the deadline.

Everton could still sign Maxi Gomez

Attention now turns to the free agent market for any clubs still keen to do business.

Everton will perhaps be assessing their options after failing to land Moyes’ priority position; a centre-forward.

That said, Maxi Gomez could crop up as a potential target for the Toffees having been interested in him previously.

Carlo Ancelotti wanted to sign Gomez in 2020 and even made contact with his club at the time, Valencia, but no deal was found.

Gomez, now 28, finds himself without a club heading into the second half of the season having left Turkish side Trabzonspor last summer

According to EL Pais, The former Uruguay international is keen to return to Europe and has received several enquiries but at the moment, he’s keeping fit in local tournaments in his hometown Paysandu.

Gomez’s prolific goalscoring record

Gomez has a pretty prolific record in Europe, most notably in La Liga with Valencia and Celta Vigo.

The free agent netted a commendable 52 times in Spain’s top division and laid on 20 assists across 198 appearances.

Gomez’s most prolific year was during the 2017/18 campaign, when he netted 18 times for Celta Vigo, putting him alongside Gareth Bale and Antoine Griezmann in the goalscoring charts.

His 89 career goals are nothing to sniff at, so clearly he should be seriously considered by Everton chiefs.

Everton fans will still be relishing the Toffees’ performance against Leicester City last weekend.

David Moyes has brought the feel-good factor back to Goodison Park as Everton are flying in the Premier League at the moment.

The performance against Leicester was particularly significant as Moyes’ side got one over on their relegation rivals.

Everton fans praised Beto’s performance as the striker found a spark last Saturday as nothing can seem to go wrong for the Toffees at the moment.

One player got high praise from Premier League legends Gianfranco Zola and Jamie Carragher.
