Former Tennessee assistant sends message to Vols AD Danny White after canceled Nebraska series
Former Tennessee football assistant Alex Golesh appears to be making his pitch to Vols AD Danny White with a spot on the schedule opening up.
On Friday, it was first reported that Tennessee and Nebraska were canceling a home-and-home series set for 2026 and 2027. However, White was quick to social media to clarify that the decision was far from mutual and the responsibility for the cancellation rested solely on the Huskers.
White described the Vols as “very disappointed” that the series between historical powers was canceled. He also expressed that desire with the 2026 season not too far away.
Fortunately, Golesh wants to help with the scheduling crunch, or so it would seem. The former Tennessee OC under Josh Heupel quoted White’s post on X (formerly Twitter) with a simple question and the hashtag “ComeToTheBay.”
Golesh is now the head coach at South Florida, so if he’s offering to play the Vols, it would be an interesting matchup of Heupel vs. his first OC in Knoxville:
Golesh worked under Heupel at UCF in 2020 as a co-OC and tight ends coach before following Heupel to Tennessee. He helped lead the Vols to the nation’s No. 1 scoring offense in 2022 (46.1 points per game) before accepting the job at USF.
As the head coach of the Bulls, Golesh is 14-12 overall with a pair of bowl victories. And while it’s probably unlikely that USF and Tennessee hammer out a matchup, it’s a fun proposition to ponder.
Former Alabama QB gives Tennessee football a 50-50 chance to make CFP return
How confident should Tennessee football fans feel ahead of the 2025 season getting here? It really depends who you ask, as some analysts are quite high on the potential of Josh Heupel’s team, while others are a bit worried.
Former Alabama signal-caller and current ESPN commentator Greg McElroy is split right down the middle. McElroy knows Tennessee is bringing back plenty of talent, including star quarterback Nico Iamaleava. However, he is giving the Vols a 50-50 chance to make a return trip to the College Football Playoff next campaign. What’s it going to take for UT to be among the top teams in the country?

“I think Tennessee is one of those teams that could win the National Championship, or have an 8-4 season,” McElroy said. “It’s partly about how much do you value the pieces that were lost? They lost 27 players. The good news is they went out and brought in 29 players. One of the bigger questions is how much better can they be on offense? A lot of this hinges on the continued growth and development of Nico Iamaleava.”Shedeur Sanders & Cam Ward in Joel Klatt’s Top 5 QB’s in the 2025 NFL Draft | Joel Klatt Show

McElroy went on to discuss how much he likes what he saw out of the young signal-caller late in the season. However, he also is a bit concerned on whether or not the QB can continue to play at an elite level on a consistent basis.
