Big Ange confirms Tottenham star is available to face Manchester City after missing Ipswich win
Fit-again Timo Werner was left out of the Tottenham Hotspur squad vs Ipswich Town on Saturday
The injury issues at Tottenham Hotspur are slowly starting to ease off of late. Ange Postecoglou welcomed as many as five players back from injury in the 1-0 win over Manchester United at home earlier this month.
After registering three Premier League wins on the spin, Spurs host Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Lilywhites have already beaten Man City twice this season—4-0 at the Etihad Stadium in the league and 2-1 in the Carabao Cup round of 16.
On Tuesday, Ange Postecoglou faced the media for pre-match duties. He said in his pre-match presser that Saturday’s 4-1 away win over relegation-threatened Ipswich Town brought no new injury concerns for Tottenham.
The Greek-Aussie tactician also revealed that Timo Werner was available for selection against Ipswich Town but left out due to return of key figures from injury problems. When asked to give an update on Timo Werner and whether he is still not available for selection, Postecoglou said (h/t Football London):
“No, he was only really available for the weekend, but because of the matchday squad and the kind of makeup of the squad, I left him out obviously we’ve Ben going out we put Reguilon on as an extra defender on the bench, but it was only Sunday’s game he was actually available, but he’s trained and he’s available for tomorrow.”
Werner has been nursing a hamstring issue since mid-January. This has seen the forward miss the last 10 games. Prior to his injury, the German international’s performances for Spurs this season have left much to be desired. He has not made much of an impact on re-signing for Postecoglou’s side, registering one goal and three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.
Following the return of Brennan Johnson and James Maddison from injury problems of late, it is not surprising that Werner was not included in the matchday squad against Ipswich. The decision to include Sergio Reguilon in the travelling squad made sense owing to Ben Davies’ absence.
While Big Ange has said Werner is available for selection against Man City, it remains to be seen whether he actually makes the squad because Davies is still not fit to feature. And that would likely see Reguilon making the cut again to replace the veteran Welshman in the squad for City’s visit.
