David Moyes reveals what ‘stands out’ about Beto after three Everton misses at Brentford
The Everton forward missed three one-on-ones against Brentford on Wednesday, but has been praised by David Moyes
David Moyes sought to turn Beto’s misses against Brentford into a positive as he offered praise to his in-form striker.
The 27-year-old had scored five goals in the last four Premier League games in a remarkable run of displays that placed him at the heart of a club that, but for an injury crisis, he could have departed during the January transfer window.
Beto was influential once again as the Blues earned a point in west London – but could not score for a fifth consecutive league game despite three glorious opportunities.

The Guinea-Bissau international was thwarted twice by Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken in the closing stages of the first half – the misses looking set to be costly as they were followed by Yoane Wissa heading the hosts in front.
Jake O’Brien’s diving header levelled for Everton late on but there was still time for Beto to win the game – only for Flekken to again save when the forward was through on goal.
After the match, Moyes conceded he was disappointed his side had not come away with all three points but sought to turn Beto’s missed chances into a positive – stating how the ease with which he was getting into such good positions so regularly showed there was more than luck to his game.
Moyes said: “Do you know, the biggest thing I would say is that he is a centre forward and he has got through three times, again. Maybe the other ones, you might have thought ‘oh they were a bit flukey’. He’s done it again three times tonight, that’s three times he’s got away and given himself [a chance] so I hope he keeps continuing to get those opportunities to do that. I know he doesn’t score them tonight. But, again one of the things we said when we came in was that we’re not making many chances anymore. Beto’s had three really good ones tonight, which stands out really.”

He might only have got a reprieve because Abdoulaye Doucoure’s wife was about to give birth but Carlos Alcaraz produced a second ‘Daddy’ of a performance in London in less than a fortnight. There was no assist or winning goal from Everton’s latest recruit on this occasion, yet this was still another highly polished display in the capital from the on-loan Flamengo man who only arrived on the final day of the winter transfer window.
It might have seemed harsh for Moyes to leave Alcaraz out for the Blues’ previous match at home to Manchester United following his heroics at Selhurst Park but the decision to restore Doucoure was vindicated by a typically hard-running display that led the charge to keep the Red Devils on the back foot at Goodison Park and of course was rewarded with a goal of his own.
With the 32-year-old unavailable against Brentford due to family matters though, Alcaraz – also backed by a couple of Argentina flags in the away end at the Gtech Community Stadium – brought a very different kind of skill set to that same area of the pitch.
