West Ham United appoint Graham Potter as new head coach - We Ain't Got No History

West Ham training video answers big Evan Ferguson debut question

West Ham fans are itching to see more of Evan Ferguson after two cameo substitute appearances since arriving from Brighton.

West Ham welcome Leicester City to the London Stadium in the Premier League.

Expectations are hight after the Hammers’ 1-0 win at Arsenal.

The Gunners were one of a reported 20 clubs competing with West Ham for Evan Ferguson.

But the striker’s good relationship with Graham Potter ensured West Ham won the race.

To rub salt in the wound, Ferguson was only needed for a 10-minute cameo against striker-less Arsenal.

Hammers fans were excited at finally signing a young, talented striker.

There was disappointment that it was a straight loan deal.

But hope remains that Ferguson can hit it off in east London and West Ham will sign him permanently.

The player himself will have to feel that is the right move for him of course.

So getting the game time which motivated his move to West Ham in the first place will be key.

Ankle injuries have seen Ferguson’s progress stall, though.

In fact a recent one nearly saw West Ham look elsewhere for a striker signing.

But Potter pushed for the man he signed when at Brighton and has stated Ferguson’s minutes need to be carefully managed.

That has certainly been the case so far with Ferguson coming on at half-time of the defeat to Brentford and then the 82nd minute at Arsenal.

West Ham’s victory at the Emirates was a brilliant performance and result.

However, some were disappointed with how the Hammers approached the game after the Gunners went down to 10 men.

Potter’s side sat quite deep, inviting pressure – with the clear intention of counter-attacking.

Many fans wanted to see Ferguson come on when Myles Lewis-Skelly was red-carded.

He eventually did but had little time to show what he can do.

Although he should have been put in on goal by Mohammed Kudus to kill the game.

Ferguson showed great promise when he came on against the Bees before that.

Now fans are wanting to see the Republic of Ireland international from the start against Leicester.

Fans desperate to see new striker Ferguson get a start

And a West Ham training video answers the big Ferguson debut question.

The Foxes are likely to pose the Hammers a different problem to Arsenal.

It is one the team has struggled to deal with for the best part of 14 months, let alone this season.

When the Hammers face a team that sits back against them and says ‘break us down’ it does not usually end well.

Games against Brentford and Palace are good examples of that trend continuing under Potter.

The new boss is trying to change that with his formations and approach, though.

Jarrod Bowen played as the striker against Arsenal to great effect.

But when the opposition is sitting off, it does not work as well.

That’s when a proper, bona fide striker is needed to link play and pull the defenders out of position.

West Ham fans are hoping to see Ferguson get his full debut from the start against Leicester.

Footage suggests Ferguson’s Hammers wait goes on

They may be left wanting if video from training is anything to go by.

The club’s media team has posted video from West Ham training for Leicester.

The footage appears to suggest Ferguson will once again start on the bench against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side.

West Ham’s players can be seen doing different drills and rondos.

There’s an old saying in football – never change a winning team.

Eagle-eyed fans may spot that the entire substitute’s bench from the game at Arsenal were very deliberately working in a separate group.

Ferguson was in several drills with that group, which also contains Danny Ings, Andy Irving, Carlos Soler, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Luis Guilherme, Guido Rodriguez and Emerson Palmieri.

Based on that evidence it looks like Ferguson and West Ham fans may have to wait a little longer for his first start.
