Oilers acquire Trent Frederic from Bruins in three-team trade involving Devils

Trent Frederic is changing conferences and headed to the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton announced Tuesday afternoon that they acquired the feisty forward from the Boston Bruins in a three-team trade involving the New Jersey Devils. The trade’s full details include five total players on the move, two draft picks to Boston, and the Devils retaining 50 percent of Frederic’s salary.

Frederic is a former Bruins first-round pick, drafted 29th overall by Boston in the 2016 NHL Draft. The 26-year-old forward recorded a career-high 40 points (18g, 22a) last season and is in the final year of the two-year, $4.6 million extension he signed with Boston in 2023. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

In 57 games this year, he has recorded just 15 points (8g, 7a). Frederic is currently on injured reserve, listed as out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

The Washington Capitals were previously rumored to have interest in acquiring the versatile forward. Frederic can play both wing and center and has thrown 155 hits this season.

Jones is a depth winger who has spent most of the 2024-25 campaign in the AHL with the Providence Bruins. In seven NHL games, he has zero points and eight penalty minutes. The 27-year-old winger tallied a career high 19 points (9g, 10a) in 69 games for the Anaheim Ducks two years ago.

Hauser, a two-time World Juniors participant for Czechia, was selected by the Devils in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft. The 21-year-old Czech forward has spent the past three seasons playing in the Czech Extraliga with Sparta Praha, Skoda Plzen, and Vitkovice Ridera.

Lachance is playing in his sophomore season for Boston University this year. In 32 games for the Terriers, the 2021 sixth-round pick has recorded 25 points (10g, 15a).

Lachances’s father, Scott Lachance, played 819 NHL games over 13 seasons for the New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Per New Jersey’s press release, Scott is currently the Devils’ Head of US Scouting.
