Alabama Head Coach Nate Oats Describes Concern With Latest Loss

In Alabama’s final home of the regular season, No. 5 Florida came out victorious in a 99-94 shootout against the Crimson Tide. That loss was the second straight and fourth out of the last six games for Alabama, and Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats is keenly aware of the downward spiral his team is on. “We knew it was going to be a tough stretch to close,” Oats said. “I thought we’d do better. I thought we’d at least play with more effort; I’m not panicked we’re losing it’s more concerning how we lost, you know, getting out-rebounded by 15 and just not getting the 50-50, balls. And I think Florida had more pop, more energy. So that’s concerning to me.”

The Crimson Tide allowed Florida to grab 16 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points and a 22-10 fast break point advantage for the Gators. “You got to be able to rebound the ball on the defensive side, to get out in transition,” Oats said. “The fact that, you know, they had 16 (offensive) boards… I mean, you saw we’re taking (the ball) out of the net too much. We were trying to run on makes. We’re too slow getting it out. But if you can’t get stops, it’s hard to be, you know, a fast-paced team…So our defensive rebounding wasn’t where it needed to be.” Alabama will have a chance to right the ship in the regular season finale on Saturday when it travels to face No. 1 Auburn inside Neville Arena. The Tigers defeated the Crimson Tide 94-85 on February 15 in the first contest between the two rivals.

New angle of Jahmai Mashack’s buzzer beater shows that Alabama got robbed

A new angle of Jahmai Mashack’s game winning three for Tennessee to beat Alabama on Saturday shows that Rick Barnes and Zakai Ziegler both called a timeout before the shot.

Alabama basketball suffered a devastating loss on a buzzer beater to Tennessee on Saturday. It was a loss that ended the Crimson Tide’s chances of earning a share of the SEC Regular Season title and made it an uphill battle to maintain a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee’s Jahmai Mashack hit a 30-footer at the buzzer to lift the Vols to a 79-76 win over the Crimson Tide. A new angle of the shot shared via Twitter shows that Mashack’s shot shouldn’t have counted because both Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes and guard Zakai Ziegler were signaling timeout prior to the shot attempt.

A new angle of the shot shared via Twitter shows that Mashack’s shot shouldn’t have counted because both Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes and guard Zakai Ziegler were signaling timeout prior to the shot attempt.

Barnes seemed visibly upset that the timeout wasn’t granted as Mashack’s shot went up. From the angle here, it’s not even clear if he saw the ball go through the net as he had turned his attention to berating the official.

If a timeout had been granted, Tennessee would have had a little over one second left to draw something up for a sideline out of bounds play. With the way the final 30 seconds of the game went for Alabama anyway, I’m sure they would have found a way to mess up a defensive assignment and give up a wide open look for commit a foul regardless.
