Rangers Injury Woes Deepen with Jon Gray Missing Extended Time

Texas Rangers starter Jon Gray will miss “extended time” after being struck by a line drive and fracturing his wrist. The Rangers’ pitching staff took another hit Friday, as Gray was hit by a line drive from Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia. Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters shortly after Gray was removed from the game that it was “not good news.”

While Bochy did not provide specifics on a return timeline, president of baseball operations Chris Young told MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry that Gray will miss “extended time.” According to Young, it will be at least six weeks before Gray is even cleared to start throwing again. The 33-year-old made two trips to the injured list last season. He will likely open this season on the 60-day injured list.

Rangers Pitcher Jon Gray to Miss “Extended Time” with Wrist Fracture

Gray’s injury is the third setback to hit the Rangers’ starting rotation this week. Texas announced on Thursday that left-hander Cody Bradford will start the season on the injured list with an elbow injury. Bradford’s MRI came back clean, but he will be shut down from throwing for at least the next four weeks. Earlier this week, Tyler Mahle was scratched from a start with forearm soreness. However, he returned to pitch in a minor league game on Thursday.

Rangers Starter to Miss Extended Time with Fractured Wrist

In the final year of a four-year, $56 million deal, Gray has made seven trips to the injured list since signing with the Rangers in 2021. After tossing three scoreless innings during Game 3 of the 2023 World Series, he was limited to just 102 2⁄3 innings last season. The veteran right-hander was pitching well all spring. He was scheduled to go five innings in his third start on Friday. Gray had not allowed a run or a walk while striking out five in eight spring innings. He is 21-21 with a 4.16 ERA over three seasons with the Rangers.

With both Gray and Bradford sidelined, right-handers Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter would likely slot into the rotation to start the season. Adrian Houser, who replaced Gray on Friday, could also be an option. He is in camp on a minor league deal.
