Tottenham’s miseries continued in the 2024/25 campaign as they suffered their 15th league defeat at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Rodrigo Muniz and Ryan Sessegnon were on target as Fulham comfortably beat the North London outfit 2-0. After the match, as Postecoglou walked into the tunnel, he had a verbal altercation with a Spurs fan, who kept screaming ‘What was that?’ at the Australian coach. Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel came in between and had to act as a peacemaker.
Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium remains uncertain as the club dropped to the 14th position on the league table. Back in January, reports emerged that the club were not planning to part ways with the 59-year-old manager amid a huge injury crisis in the squad. The result piles further pressure on the Australian manager, who opted to leave Son Heung-min and James Maddison out of his starting XI. His team failed to muster a shot on target until the 65th minute, and there were jeers from the away end as the players walked off. Postecoglou himself was targeted as he made his way down the tunnel, with one fan shouting questions at the 59-year-old
“What was that (performance)? I mean, what was that?” he ranted as Postecoglou turned to face him. “What was it? I’m just asking, what was it?”
Postecoglou was heard trying to reason with the supporter, saying, “Hey, you’re a young man…” before one of his own players stepped in. Striker Mathys Tel appeared to usher his boss away before telling the fan to “Show some respect.
A member of the Tottenham coaching staff then sought to calm matters as Postecoglou headed for the changing rooms. There was little mention of the incident in the ex-Celtic man’s post-game analysis, but he did take aim at his side for their below-par display.
Tottenham’s season now appears to hinge on the Europa League, with Spurs facing Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals next month. However, the manager conceded that their domestic form had not been good enough as they battle to avoid their lowest-ever finish in a Premier League season.
