Premier League winning hero slams ‘scared’ Leicester City as transfers slated
Leicester City legend Marc Albrighton isn’t convinced of Foxes’ survival chances
With seven straight defeats, even the most optimistic of Leicester fans are struggling to believe the side can turn their fortunes around and pull off one of the Premier League’s greatest escapes.
Leicester legend Marc Albrighton has come to agree with many critics after revealing their situation “is not looking great”.
The club’s Premier League winner revealed he’s struggling to see a way out of this seasons poor form, after several failures to bolster the squad even going as far as calling himself naive for believing they could stay up at the start of the season.
Leicester currently sit in 19th and are nine points away from safety as the weekend’s defeat to Manchester United marked 13 losses in 14 games. With just nine games left of the season Ruud van Nistelrooy has vowed he’ll keep battling until the end.
The Dutchman said: “It’s about the mathematical possibility that is there. As long as that is the case, we are professionals and keep doing our jobs. We can’t and won’t give up until it’s mathematically impossible.”
But the winger who played a part in some of Leicester’s most successful years is less optimistic, asked if it could be all over by the time Leicester play Wolves and Southampton, he said: “Yeah, it’s not looking great. The performance today [Sunday] and in recent weeks suggests they’re not going to improve. Watching these coming games, they’re very difficult games against top sides.”
The player turned pundit, believes the side now lacks the confidence to be assertive in matches and make it difficult for their opposition. He went on to say: “Nobody wants to be the one to give it away, so they play the safe pass. Defensively they’re scared to to go and commit to to put a tackle in. People are standing off, standing off the attackers and giving them a free shot and that’s where the goal comes from [on Sunday].”
Despite being optimistic at the start of the season, Albrighton believed the lack of any performance changing transfers sealed the deal, arguing that any new signings are “either sitting on the bench or they’re sitting at home watching the game.”
He also believes the club never truly recovered after losing Enzo Maresca, with the team failing to find a definitive playing style with the change from the short passes and high possession style of the Italian, to Steve Cooper’s more direct style of play.
Speaking after the match former Manchester United defender Phil Jones agreed with the his fellow pundit adding: “It’s not quite worked, as Mark said, I don’t really think they’ve strengthened enough, and some of the lads there are lower than a snake’s belly.
“You know, the run of fixtures they’ve got coming up, it’s, it looks almost impossible, but, stranger things have happened, it’s, it’s been done before, but it doesn’t, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that they’re going to get themselves out of the bottom three.”
