Denmark manager Brian Riemer has discussed Jannik Vestergaard’s situation at Leicester City, after naming the defender in his squad for matches against Portugal during the international break.
Vestergaard last played for the Foxes at the end of last month in a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League and City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has surprisingly left the 32-year-old centre-back out of his last two squads against Chelsea and Manchester United.
It was suggested his lack of playing time this month would jeopardise his place in the Denmark squad for Nations League quarter-final matches against Portugal on Thursday and Sunday.
But Riemer named Vestergaard in his 23-man squad before admitting the player’s situation at club level is not ideal.
“My goal is to select as many in-form players as possible, and sometimes there may be situations where you have to compromise on one or two things.
“The good thing is that if you look over a longer period than two games, Jannik has played, so we don’t get a player who hasn’t started in five months.
“But if you ask me if I had hoped he had played these games and come in with top form, then of course I did.”

Leicester City’s Connor Coady has spoken of the team’s low morale after another goalless loss to a struggling Manchester United side at the weekend.
The 3-0 loss on Saturday added to a horrific run of form for the Foxes’ who have been defeated in 13 out of the last 14 games leaving them a mountain to climb to avoid next season in the Championship.
A whopping nine points stand between the squad and safety – even larger than the seven point difference the club managed to clear in it’s great escape nearly 10 years ago.
In an interview after Sunday’s game Coady admitted the struggles have not only got the fans down but also had an impact inside the dressing room.
The England international revealed to Sky Sports: “It’s hard, but to be honest with you we’re fragile at the minute, you can tell, I think you can see.
“Kind of the chances we’re making it, we’re just a little bit fragile and listen, it’s a tough place at the minute. But I’ve just said we’ve got to pick ourselves up somehow, somewhere, and try and get back on the bike again.”
