Neil Warnock 'agrees to stay on' as Huddersfield Town boss after Kevin M. Nagle talks - YorkshireLive

Sorba Thomas being careful who he listens to as clear Huddersfield Town target set

The winger wants to learn as much as he can from Neil Warnock and his coaching team but want to shut out the rest of the noise as he aims to enjoy a better season this time around

Sorba Thomas is enjoying absorbing everything that Neil Warnock and Ronnie Jepson have had to teach to him since returning from his loan spell at Ewood Park to rejoin the Terriers squad – but says he will not be paying attention to any criticism levelled at him from outside the club.

The winger fell out of favour under both Mark Fotheringham at Huddersfield Town and under Jon Dahl Tomasson at Blackburn Rovers last season. But during that loan spell, Warnock was meanwhile bemoaning that he did not have the Welsh international available in his own squad to aid in the battle against relegation

Town managed to get out of that jam regardless, and the gaffer now hopes that Thomas can be a key player in the season ahead. That was reflected in the Welshman being given the captain’s armband for the final half an hour against Stockport County as he was the only member of the starting line-up to be left on for the whole 90 minutes.

Thomas said after the game: “It’s going good. I feel like last season was a bit of a learning curve for me. Obviously every player in the world has their tough seasons, so for me it’s just about not focusing on what I’m hearing elsewhere, but just focusing on what I believe in and what I know I can bring to the team on the pitch. For me it’s about keeping on believing in myself and believing in my self-worth.

For myself, I don’t really want to listen to other people [outside the club], and I feel like Neil Warnock is the right guy. He’s been around the game and dealt with guys with massive egos. I’m just all about learning and trying to better myself, and you never know what can happen really.

“It’s about not listening to other people – only listening to what I believe and what the manager says and all the other people around me, and just block out the noise and do what I do really.”

Warnock told us last week that he wants to see Thomas getting in better positions to get on the scoresheet more often, and the winger confirmed: “The gaffer’s been on me but Ronnie been on me more to be honest. I’ve got a good relationship with Ronnie and he’s been on my case – he especially wants me to add more goals to my games as well as assists.

“For me it’s just about listening and learning. They’ve both been in the game for a very long time, they’re both experienced people, and for me all I can do is get on the pitch and do what I do best.

“It’s about being in the right areas, getting the right instinct, and he wants to contribute more goals to help the team. That’s my goal for the season really.”

And the team’s ambitions? “For us, we’ve got no expectations on us and people are writing us off already – but they did that in Carlos’ [second] year and look where it got us. We need to not listen to outside noise and do what we do really.”
