Hull City make George Cox transfer decision after week-long trial comes to an end

The latest transfer news from Hull Live 10 days out from the start of the new Championship campaign

Former Brighton and Hove Albion defender George Cox will not be offered a contract by Hull City after his short trial with the Championship came to an end last Friday.

The 25-year-old was a free agent after leaving Fortuna Sittard at the end of the season to pursue a move back to England and played in friendlies at Grimsby Town and last Tuesday against Barnsley before missing the trip to Valley Parade and Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe United.

Cox missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Bradford City having returned home to deal with a family issue and was informed of the decision on Sunday by City head coach Liam Rosenior, who has opted to go in a different direction.

Both displays from the cultured left-back were hugely encouraging and many supporters expected Rosenior to make Cox his latest summer addition, but that is now not on the agenda.

“For now, yes,” Rosenior said when asked if a decision had been made. “Coxy did great coming in but at the moment, we won’t be offering him a contract.

“He’ll find a good club because he’s a really good player. It’s so hard to explain. It’s not just about the individual player, it’s the makeup of the squad, it’s different positions and we made that decision based on what we can do with the squad.”

Rosenior, who gave Ruben Vinagre a first start following his loan move from Sporting Lisbon in a drab first half at Glanford Park, opted to go with Lewie Coyle on the left side of defence in the second before bringing on Brandon Fleming on the left wing, and he says Coyle’s application was impressive.

He was really good. I wanted to see him at left-back just as an option through the season, and that’s what I love, he’s my captain, it doesn’t matter if he’s playing right-back or left-back, he gives everything.

“I thought he was another stand-out performer in what was a poor performance.”
