Cardiff City player ratings as Etete and Evans impress Bulut in first match

Cardiff City fielded two different line-ups as Erol Bulut got to see his side in action

Cardiff City opened their first match of pre-season with a 2-0 win over Penybont. There were 24 players involved with different line-ups playing in each half. Here’s how they all rated.

Had a quiet first half but dealt with pressure well when called upon

Joel Bagan6

Kion Etete of Cardiff City

Linked up well with Ralls in midfield and offered a good option going forward. Really should have scored just before the half hour mark as his chipped effort dribbled just wide.

Looked solid at the back and took his first half header really well, rising highest and giving Pennock no chance in the Penybont net with a bullet finish.

Ryan Wintle6

His fizzing corners were a constant threat and got an early assist as McGuiness nodded home. Kept busy by Clutton but generally got the better of him in a composed performance.

Joe Ralls 6

A cool head in the centre of the park

Kion Etete 7

A constant nuisance in the first half as he used his physicality and speed to good effect. Cardiff didn’t look like scoring after he went off.

Sheyi Ojo5

Did nothing wrong admittedly, but just didn’t impose himself on the game.

Jack Simpson 5

As above, fine but nothing special from him today.

Isaak Davies 6

Will be pleased with his first half performance as he saw plenty of the ball. Probably should have scored.

Callum Robinson 6

Looked lively on his return and linked up well with Ojo and Etete. Unlucky not to score before he came off on the half hour mark as he was denied by Pennock.

Rubin Colwill (’33) 6

Got on the ball right away after his introduction in the first-half. Looked comfortable on the ball and tried his best to inject some life into the game as he fizzed a shot wide from distance. No goals but not a bad performance from the Welshman.

Second half XI

Matt Turner 6

Like Alnwick, also wasn’t kept too busy in the Cardiff net – maybe even less so

Perry Ng

Composed at the back and looked to create something going forwards when those around him fell flat.

Ollie Tanner 6

Took his headed goal really well and could have had at least another as he caused Penybont problems.

Oliver Denham

The 21-year-old was a commanding presence at the back as he barked instructions at those around him, but in truth he didn’t have too much to do in that second half.

Ebou Adams 6

Great to see him back. Vocal performance and closed down pressure well. Nearly got on the scoresheet himself towards the end of the game after getting himself into a dangerous position, but couldnt prod home

Vontae Campbell 5

Looked up for it after coming on a half time, but didn’t do much in his short cameo as he was replaced after 25 minutes.

Eli King 6

A handy performance.. Played some useful balls over the top and was composed on the ball in his first outing since signing a new contract. Hopefully a big season ahead for him

Kieron Evans 7

Cardiff’s standout player in the second half. Proved a constant danger down the left hand side and it was his looping cross that set Tanner up for the second goal.

Andy Rinomhota 5

Worked his socks off in the opening 20 minutes of the half but didn’t really impose himself.

Max Watters 6

Got himself into useful positions and could have had a couple goals to his name, but was thrwarted by the Penybont defence.
