Southampton reportedly ‘favourites’ to sign Norwich defender Aarons

SAINTS are reportedly “favourites” to sign Norwich City defender Max Aarons as they line up a potential replacement for Tino Livramento.

Newcastle United are continuing their pursuit of the 20 year old former Chelsea full-back, who has featured heavily for new boss Russell Martin during pre-season.

Livramento could be involved as Saints kick off their Championship season at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday and there is no suggestion anything is imminent with the Magpies.

Saints, with new director of football Jason Wilcox leading on transfers, are not in a position where they are forced to sell unless Premier League clubs meet their valuation on players.

However, talkSPORT report that they are leading the chase to sign Norwich’s England under-21 international Aarons after the Daily Mail reported initial interest earlier in the month.

The 23 year old has only one year remaining on his contract at Championship rivals Carrow Road and has come off the back of an Under-21 European Championship win in Georgia this summer.

Aarons made 45 appearances in the Championship last season, scoring one goal and providing two assists, while he was voted EFL young player of the season after promotion in 2019.

He has been a key player in two different Championship-winning campaigns for the Canaries despite his relative youth and has been linked with interest from Saints on a number of occasions before.

Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also said to be monitoring him and the move is labelled ‘one to watch’.
