Explained: Could Everton face further punishment next season?

Kieran Maguire shares horrible verdict on Everton punishment after Leicester City saga

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes it would have been “horrible” to see Everton, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest all get point deductions last season.

Since their promotion, the Foxes have been involved in a PSR saga which could have ended up with them having points deducted from their Premier League total this term.

However, unlike Everton and Forest, they weren’t a top-flight team last season so managed to avoid being sanctioned.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [3 September], Maguire discussed the Foxes winning their appeal and shared how many points they could have been docked if they didn’t get relegated.

“I think that they [Leicester] would have been looking at a nine or ten points deduction for last season had they stayed up,” he said.

“It would’ve been a pretty horrible situation if we’d had three clubs, Nottingham Forest, Everton and Leicester all subject to points deductions, it was bad enough with two.

“It certainly could have had an impact, we don’t know how Leicester would have performed in the Premier League last season.

verton need to pick up their Premier League form

The start of the 2024/25 season has been far from ideal for the Toffees. The Merseyside outfit find themselves at rock bottom of the Premier League with zero points to their name.

Following a fairly decent summer window which saw the likes of Iliman Ndiaye, Jake O’Brien and Jesper Lindstrom arrive at Goodison Park, more was expected of Sean Dyche’s men.

Instead, the club have found themselves in yet another relegation battle and, after their catastrophic collapse against Bournemouth on 31 August where they somehow managed to throw away a two-goal lead, there’s no denying that fans are starting to lose patience with their team.

Whilst the game against Bournemouth might not have been the club’s finest hour, the first 80 minutes of the clash were dominated by Dyche’s men.

To take another positive from a poor performance, both Tim Iroegbunam and Ndiaye had stellar games and could have a real impact on the Toffees’ league position by the end of the season.

It’s still far too early in the campaign to predict where they’ll end up but things need to be turned around soon otherwise they’ll have a massive hill to climb.
